Consumers and Competition

Two ENCORE-workshop and the Annual Conference dealt with issues on 'Consumers and Competition'.

Accepted bids for research on Experiments for Antitrust Policies

After sending the fellows a call for papers regarding the above topic, ENCORE received lots of bids for research. The accepted research topics are:

  • An overview of experimental results on (tacit) collusion, by Haan, M., Schoonbeek, L. and Winkel, B. M.
  • Transparancy and market performance; experimental evidence , by Potters, J.
  • Price ceilings, by Normann, H.-T. and Engelmann, D.
  • Experiments on abuse of a dominant position, by Van Damme, E., Hancher, L., Larouche, P. and Müller, W.
  • Experiments on changes in market structure and their effect on performance - a critical review, by Götte, L. and Schmutzler, A.

These research topics will come together in a book, which will be edited by Jeroen Hinloopen and Hans Theo Normann. The book will be published by Cambridge University Press.

'Experiments for Antitrust Policies' brings together a number of papers that each deal with a specific aspect of antitrust policies. The contributions are grouped in three distinct parts each dealing with one of the three pilars of antitrust: (tacit) collusion, (abuse of) dominance, and merger control. Each part begins with an overview chapter summerizing the related experimental research, followed by a number of chapters that discuss each a specific antitrust experiment.

ENCORE organized a two-day workshop on 18 and 19 March 2005 in Amsterdam during which the several papers were presented and discussed. This workshop served as a first refereeing round towards the edited volume.

ESB Issue: Ten years of competition and regulation policy in The Netherlands

ESB (Economic Statistical Journal) in cooperation with ENCORE has launched a journal dedicated to Dutch competition and regulation policy.

A great deal of competition and regulation operations seem to be a succes (telecom), while other operations have failed (railways). Time to draw up the balance. This issue looks back on the role of policy makers and policy advisors in the last decade. What lessons can be learned?
