Stimulate academic education, training and knowledge exchange
The aim of ENCORE is to stimulate academic education and training
in the area of industrial organization, competition and regulation.
This can be in the bachelor’s and master’s programmes
of economic faculties, other training options or through various,
more indirect ways (e.g. by awarding a master’s thesis prize,
by organizing trainee pools and by editing a handbook with case
studies in competition and regulation). This website aims te become
a prime source of information on education and training in competition,
regulation and industrial organization.
Stimulate Bachelor and Master programs
ENCORE wants to stimulate and help lecturers to set up and organize courses in industrial organization and the economics of competition and regulation. ENCORE has been collecting information on these types of courses taught at Dutch universities (click here). It is hoped that this information will be a source of inspiration to those who are planning to set up and organize IO(-related) courses.
Stimulate PhD training
The Netherlands Network of Economics (NAKE) provides specialized
courses for PhD students of economics. These specialized courses
are usually taught at the University of Utrecht (because of its
central location) by academics who work at Dutch universities.
A student who successfully completes a specialized course is awarded
two credits. A PhD student needs to gain between 24 and 36 credits.
ENCORE will stimulate its Fellows to make sure that advanced courses
on competition, regulation and industrial organization are offered
each year in the NAKE programme (click
here).
Stimulate post-academic training
ENCORE will be setting up special courses in the area of competition,
regulation and industrial organization at different levels (primer,
introductory, intermediate, advanced) for participants outside
academia. These participants will mostly come from the staff of
competition authorities, regulators, ministries and research institutes
Master classes in Competition and Regulation
Foreign specialist in the area of competition, regulation and
industrial organization will be invited to visit the Netherlands
to participate in one of the ENCORE workshops or conferences or
to stay as a visiting guest at the ENCORE premises at the University
of Amsterdam. ENCORE will – whenever appropriate and feasible
– combine these visits with the organization of a master
class by the visiting guest. A master class will consist of a
teaching part, but – even more importantly – it will
make the expertise of the visiting guest specialist available
to researchers in the Netherlands. During the master class, researchers
will be given the opportunity to have their research in progress
(article, dissertation chapter) evaluated by the ‘master’.
Foreign specialists in the area of competition and regulation
will also be invited to teach specialized Summer School sessions.
Editing a handbook with case studies
ENCORE is currently editing a handbook in which the legal and
economic contents of landmark cases from competition authorities,
regulators and judicial courts are combined with economic theory.
The handbook will provide practical, hands-on economic training
to deal with actual cases by applying lessons that can be learned
from dealing with previous cases. While editing the handbook,
ENCORE is tapping into the economic expertise that has been built
up over the years by economists working on actual cases. The handbook
will be relevant to both academic and post-academic courses.
